Frontex signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey Frontex signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey 2012-05-28 Representatives of Frontex and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed today a memorandum of understanding in the agency’s Headquarters in Warsaw. Frontex Executive Director Ilkka Laitinen and Director General for Consular Affairs of Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ambassador Şakir Fakılı signed the document, which promotes establishment of practical cooperation between Frontex and Turkish authorities competent in border management. Frontex and the Turkish authorities agree to cooperation in the fields of risk analysis, training as well as research and development. Moreover, Frontex and the competent Turkish authorities concur to exchange experiences and best practices in border control and foresee the possibility of deployment of Turkish officers to selected border crossing points at the external EU borders under the Focal Points project. The intended cooperation will be implemented via contact points established in the respective units for each of the areas of cooperation referred to above. Read more
Frontex responds to the European Ombudsman Frontex responds to the European Ombudsman 2012-05-23 Frontex has sent its response to the European Ombudsman’s enquiry related to the integration of respect of fundamental rights into the performance of its tasks. The Frontex Executive Director, Ilkka Laitinen, noted that Frontex, from the very beginning of its work, took the respect of fundamental rights as a sine qua non in the performance of all its tasks, and particularly its joint operations and that, as its operations have become more complex and challenging in recent years, Frontex quickly recognised the need for clear Fundamental Rights and other guidelines for all those taking part in the activities it organises. Frontex to launch an operation during Eurocup 2012 Frontex to launch an operation during Eurocup 2012 2012-05-18 During Eurocup 2012 Frontex will coordinate a joint operation in support of Polish and Ukrainian border guards. From the beginning of June over 100 officers from 23 EU Member States will be deployed on the Polish-Ukrainian border to assist with border checks and border surveillance. At the same time border guards from several Member States and third countries will be working in key airports in Poland and the Ukraine. Read more

Frontex Consultative Forum and Fundamental Rights Officer Frontex Consultative Forum and Fundamental Rights Officer 2012-04-27 The amended Frontex Regulation in Article 26a mandates that Frontex shall establish a Consultative Forum (CF) and designate a Fundamental Rights Officer (FRO). In February 2012, Frontex Management Board (MB) established a Drafting Advisory Committee (DAC) composed of representatives of the Management Board (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the European Commission), joined at a later stage – for the discussion on the Consultative Forum only – by representatives of the partner organisations mentioned in Article 26a of the Regulation (FRA, EASO and UNHCR). The DAC shall advise and guide the Agency in the preparations of the relevant Frontex Management Board Decisions in view of implementing the abovementioned Article. Read more
