    First Global ABC Conference & Exhibition

    More than two hundred representatives of EU member states and agencies, non-EU states, international organizations, industry and research bodies gathered in Warsaw for the conference on Border Crossing - as easy as ABC on October 25-26. The event — co-organised by Frontex and the European Commission — was the first global conference examining topical themes in the fast-changing world of Automated Border Control (ABC) technology.

    Combating human trafficking at the border - training for EU Border Guards

    Trafficking in persons, or human trafficking, refers to the subjection of men, women and children to exploitative conditions that can be equivalent to slavery. Trafficking in human beings (THB) is a global phenomenon targeting women and men, girls and boys. The International Labour Organisation reported in June 2012 that in the past ten years there were over 20 million victims of trafficking worldwide, a quarter of them children. Although this crime is not frequently reported at the external borders of the European Union, human trafficking is closely related to the work of border guards. Often, border guards are the only law enforcement officials that the victims of trafficking come into contact with. Consequently, strengthening the capacity of border guards to prevent and combat THB is of paramount importance.

    Consultative Forum on Fundamental Rights elects Chairpersons at inaugural meeting

    Warsaw, 16 October 2012 — At its inaugural meeting at Frontex’s Warsaw headquarters today, the agency’s newly-formed Consultative Forum on Fundamental Rights elected its first two Co-Chairs. Ms Aydan Iyigüngör, of the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) and Stefan Kessler of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) will serve for one year as Co-Chairs representing EU Agencies and NGOs respectively.

    Situational update: Migratory situation at the Greek-Turkish border

    The numbers of migrants crossing the Greek-Turkish land border dropped from over 2000 a week in the first week of August to little over 200 in the second week. This is the direct effect of increased surveillance and patrolling activities by the Greek authorities, which included the deployment of an additional 1800 officers along the Evros river at the beginning of August.
