The latest report by the Frontex Risk Analysis Network (FRAN) shows a clear shift from the East to the Central Mediterranean as the focus for irregular migration at the EU’s external borders. For the first time since the beginning of data collection in 2008,detections of illegal border crossings in the first quarter of the year (Q1) exceeded those for the previous quarter.

Frontex’s Annual Risk Analysis 2011 records the main trends in regular and irregular migration into the European Union in 2010 and offers predictions for the coming year’s trends. Regarding irregular migration, the sharp decrease reported in 2009 (of around a third on 2008) stabilised in 2010; Member States and Schengen Associated Countries reported a total of 104,049 detections of illegal border crossing at the sea and land external borders, a total almost identical to the 2009 figure of 104,599.

On April 5, Joint Operation European Patrol Network (JO EPN) Aeneas 2011 was launched. Due to an increasing number of incidents being reported by the Italian authorities where the last departure point was the Greek coast. Greek authorities also reported several cases of luxury sailing boats and yachts intercepted, bound for Italy. It seemed that a first-class route had been discovered.
