    Frontex Focal Points — The sea’s the limit

    Frontex-coordinated Focal Points were established to offer longer-term exchanges of border guards at key point at the external borders. Working in other member states together with peers from different backgrounds and facing different challenges provides a unique opportunity for officers to exchange experience and different approaches to the job; a vital element in the development of individual officers and of best practice in the field.

    The Feasibility of a European System of Border Guards Conference Report

    The final report of the Conference ‘The Feasibility of a European System of Border Guards: A Practitioner’s Perspective’ was compiled by rapporteurs Dr Peter Hobbing and Mr Emilio De Capitani. The report is based on a conference held in Warsaw in October last year and constitutes a practitioners’ input to the ongoing discussion on the future of the justice and home affairs (JHA) area. The report has been shared with the European Commission, European Parliament and Council.

    Irregular Arrivals Were at Record High in the Third Quarter of 2013

    The third quarter (Q3) of 2013 saw a massive upswing in irregular migrants arrivals in the Central Mediterranean. This, combined with sustained detections in the Ionian and Eastern Aegean Seas, meant there were more detections of illegal border-crossing at the EU maritime borders than during the height of the 2011 ‘Arab Spring.’ There were also more applications for international protection than at any other time since data collection began for this indicator in 2008.
