The Fundamental Rights Office at Frontex exists to build accountability and trust in external border management through the monitoring of operations in the field. The goal of the Fundamental Rights Officer (FRO) is to make sure that Frontex officers in the field follow the rules when managing the flow of people and goods across borders. The Office is an independent entity within Frontex.
The current Deputy FRO is Grigorios Tsioukas, a Greek lawyer. Grigorios and other FRO monitors frequently visit Frontex operational areas to assess the situation in the field. One of their primary tasks is monitoring forced-return operations including flights to countries of origin.
