Frontex trains screening officers in Riga

2016-08-26

This week, Frontex conducted a training course for 20 screening officers, who play an essential role in registering of migrants by helping determine the nationality of the people arriving at Europe’s external borders.

So far this year, Frontex has trained 60 screening experts, who assist the local authorities hosting Frontex operations, such as Greece and Italy.

The course, which took place in Riga at the request of Latvian authorities, focused on practical exercises in screening interviews and gathering information about the migrants’ country of origin information, including cooperating closely with an interpreter.

It also provided an overview of the fundamental rights and ways to identify vulnerable persons who need to be referred to the national authorities of a country hosting a Frontex operation. The trainers also presented the Access to Asylum Tool, a practical guide developed for European border guards who first come into contact with people in need of international protection developed jointly by Frontex and the European Asylum Support Office (EASO).

This year, Frontex has deployed 112 screening experts in its operations at various land and sea borders.
