On 17 October, Frontex’s Deputy Executive Director, Aija Kalnaja, and the European Commission’s Acting Director-General of the Joint Research Centre, Bernard Magenhann, signed a working arrangement to intensify cooperation in the area of research and innovation.
By signing this working arrangement, Frontex and the EU Commission have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing research and innovation in the field of migration management. This agreement paves the way for streamlined sharing of results and mutual access to each other’s research and innovation activities.
The agreement encompasses border management pilot projects designed to validate, test, and optimise technological solutions. It will support projects to test and improve new border management technologies, including countering unmanned aerial systems (drones) and enhancing the detection of explosives and illicit substances. The work will also continue to assess emerging technologies for integrated border management.
This working arrangement underscores a shared determination to invest in forward-looking solutions, ensuring that the European Union remains equipped with the most effective tools for managing its borders today and in the future.
