Nearly 500 border guard officers and other officials from 41 countries took part in the seventh annual European Day for Border Guards (ED4BG) organised in Poland by Frontex on Tuesday, 24 May.

“At the annual European Day for Border Guards we honour all people in Europe involved in border management: border guard officers, coast guard officers, police and customs officers, migration police officers, armed forces personnel, and civilian staff helping make the EU a safer place,” Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri told the participants.

“This is your day to shine. You have chosen a profession that at the same time is a mission and a true calling. You are the guardians of public safety and security. I want you to be proud of your work,” he added.

The programme included panel discussions about the future of border management, a new mandate for Frontex, an inter-agency response to the unprecedented migratory pressure at the EU’s external borders and the Frontex’s role in the returns of migrants.

ED4BG presents Europe’s border-guard community with an opportunity to share experiences, best practice and common values anchored in fundamental rights. It provides a forum for an exchange of views between key border-management players.
