Frontex Deputy Executive Director Aija Kalnaja discusses next steps to expand joint operations with Bosnia and Herzegovina First Deputy Speaker Kemal Ademović

2025-08-29

On the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Conference (IPC) on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in Copenhagen, Denmark, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Kemal Ademović met Aija Kalnaja, Deputy Executive Director of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

They discussed the Agreement between the European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Status Agreement), signed on 11 June 2025. The Agreement enables Frontex Standing Corps officers with executive powers to be deployed under the command of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ms Kalnaja confirmed the Agency’s readiness to expand operations under the Status Agreement by the end of the year. Building on a scoping visit in May and the ongoing development of an operational plan, Frontex expects to extend its joint operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina from two border-crossing points to additional border-crossing points along all three borders from early October. Their support will provide technical assistance and additional personnel to help manage the border more effectively, including detections of illegal border-crossings, and help prevent and prosecute cross-border crime.
