On Monday afternoon, a coastal patrol boat operated by the Portuguese Maritime Police, taking part in Frontex’s Joint Operation in Greece, sank off the coast of Lesvos during a search and rescue mission involving irregular migrants.
The boat was carrying five crew members and a Greek officer at the time of the incident. All were rescued safely and are in good physical condition.
Following standard safety procedures, the officers alerted authorities, deployed a life raft, and awaited rescue by the Hellenic Coast Guard. A formal investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the sinking.
Frontex commends the professionalism and calm shown by the officers involved. We remain in close contact with the Portuguese and Greek authorities and will provide support throughout the inquiry.
Frontex continues to stand by its core duty: supporting Member States in managing their borders and saving lives at sea, while ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in our operations.
