Last weekend some 5600 migrants were rescued in the Central Mediterranean with assistance of Spanish, Swedish, Maltese and British vessels deployed in operation Triton. Out of the 32 Search and Rescue operations launched by the Italian and Maltese SAR authorities since Friday, 22 operations are still on-going. All aircraft and vessels coordinated by Frontex were fully deployed.

Since Friday, 29 May more than 5000 migrants were saved in the Central Mediterranean. British, Maltese, Belgian and Italian vessels and Icelandic and Finnish planes deployed in EU operation Triton coordinated by Frontex were fully engaged in this rescue effort.

Frontex expands its Joint Operation Triton

Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri signed the amended operational plan of the Joint Operation Triton, expanding its operational area and bringing in a number of additional experts, vessels and aircraft. The operational area will be extended to 138 NM south of Sicily. During the peak summer season, Triton will deploy 3 airplanes, 6 Offshore Patrol Vessels, 12 patrol boats, 2 helicopters, 9 debriefing and 6 screening teams.
