On 25–26 February 2025, the Italian Coast Guard, as Chair of the ECGFF, and Frontex hosted a workshop in Cagliari on AI and unmanned systems used in Search and Rescue (SAR). With over 100 participants from 22 Member States, EU agencies and research centres, the event explored how emerging technologies can boost coordination, safety and life-saving capacity at sea. While AI and drones offer powerful tools, experts stressed that people must remain at the heart of SAR operations. By sharing expertise and strengthening cooperation, the ECGFF and Frontex aim to ensure that innovation serves both maritime security and the protection of lives.
